Squaremouth Awards $30,000 in Secret Reading Contest

I’ve written about the importance of travel insurance before and how easy it is to get comparisons and make your purchase on Squaremouth. But what I may not have stressed adequately enough is the importance of reading not only the quotes you get but the documents after you make your purchase.

What does your policy REALLY cover? What are the exceptions?

In an effort to encourage customers to give the fine print more than a casual once over, Squaremouth recently embedded secret instructions in that fine print, with the goal of awarding $10,000 to the first person who found the secret. They expected the contest to last as long as a year but were surprised (and impressed) when a Georgia high school economics teacher claimed the prize within 23 hours of the contest launch.

Squaremouth reading awardThe winner, Donelan Andrews, says, “Teaching students to read their contracts has always been close to my heart because of my consumer economics background. I always read every contract I sign. It really paid off for me this time!”

Squaremouth also donated an additional $10,000 to Reading Is Fundamental, a children’s literacy charity. Inspired by Donelan’s commitment to her schools, Squaremouth made a surprise donation of $5,000 each to the two high schools where the winner teaches at in Georgia – Upson-Lee High School and Lamar County High School.

Even though the contest is over, NOT reading the details of your coverage can easily be a $10,000 mistake. It’s THAT important.

Squaremouth says: Over the past 16 years, we’ve learned that many travelers buy travel insurance and just assume they’re covered if anything goes wrong, without actually reading the details of their policy. However, this often leads to claims for losses that are not covered. This lack of understanding is one of the biggest reasons travel insurance claims are denied.
